+News From The Nurse+

September 2017

Welcome back to school! It is a privilege to provide a wide variety of care when needed for our kids at GHS. I hope yours have a great year full of positive growth!

Here are a few bits of general information that will make our time together a healthy one:

Allergies - Please keep in mind that some of our students have life threatening food allergies. Please check with with your classroom teacher for specifics regarding snacks, etc.

Illness - If your child is sick, and needs to stay home, kindly call the school to let us know. Please be aware that if you child has a fever, (a temperature greater than 100.0 F) he/she should not return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hrs without the use of fever reducing medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Cough drops - I will occassionally supply a mint or non-medicated hard candy to soothe a minor sore throat complaint. If you object to this for your child, please let me know. If you would like to have cough drops available for your child to use at school, please bring them to the nurse's office, to be kept there. I will label them to be used only for your child. (Although cough drops seem harmless, some young children may overuse them, chew them, or share them inappropriately, if allowed to keep a stash in their backpack.)

Special Medical Concerns - Please make me aware of any special concerns that you or your child have, that might affect their school day. I want to be supportive and helpful when needed and good communication with families and teachers is the key!  If there is an injury that necessitates your child being excluded from gym class for any period of time, A doctors note is needed for that time period.

Snacks - The teachers allow some time mid morning for a snack in the classroom. Most students are hungry at that time and a healthy snack can make a big difference in their ability to focus and continue their work. Please don't forget to send something with your student!

Other  - Occasionally cases of lice have occurred in the schools in and outside of our district, so I want to provide correct and updated information, as it can cause families a great deal of anxiety. Much misinformation abounds. Managing Head Lice in Schools information can be found by clicking on this PDF:          Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about it.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any other questions or concerns that you might have!  I wish for you and your child a happy, healthy school year full of learning and growth!

Medications:

Any medication, prescription OR over-the counter, that must be given to your child during the school day, (including "if needed only" medication such as Epi-Pen, Benedryl, Tylenol, Ibuprofen) is required to have a School Medication Authorization form signed by the Prescriber and Parent or Guardian. The Medication must be in the original labeled container and must be delivered by a parent or guardian. Medication may not be transported to or from school by the student. All medication must be picked up by the end of the school year. New forms are required each school year. In the event that a student has permission to self carry and self administer (as in the case of an inhaler), that must be indicated on the form.
